Tagging on different platforms

Most of the platforms allow you to tag people.
The problem is that each one of them has a different API.
How should we address that?
Should we allow tagging only when moving to "Edit only this" mode?
Do you have any other great ideas? :)

Yes! I think tagging can be done by "edit only this" then have a search box that lets you find the user to tag so you can confirm the account you are looking to tag. That would be awesome.
