GitHub education request not getting approved

Just a heads-up: This is a community forum, meaning we are all fellow users here. We do not have access to your account and cannot approve applications.

If your application currently shows as "Pending", it usually means it has been flagged for manual review.

Automated reviews are instant.

Manual reviews can take anywhere from 3 days to a few weeks, depending on how busy the team is.

What you can do:

Check your status on the Education Benefits page.

Check your email (including Spam folders) for any rejection notices.

If it has been more than 1 month, you can try reaching out to official GitHub Support, but usually, you just have to wait for the queue to clear.

What triggers a manual review?

Hi @nathantisdale, that is a great question!

In my experience, a Manual Review is triggered when the automated system cannot verify a specific piece of data with 100% certainty. The most common triggers are:

Email Domain: Using a personal email (like Gmail/Yahoo) instead of a school-assigned address often forces a human check.

OCR Failure: If the photo of the ID card is slightly blurry, has glare, or if the system cannot machine-read the Date or Name clearly.

Name Mismatch: If the name on the GitHub billing profile doesn't exactly match the ID (e.g., "Nate" vs. "Nathaniel").

New/Unverified School: If the school itself is new to GitHub's database or has been flagged for high fraud recently.

Essentially, if the "bot" is confused, it hands it off to a human to be safe, which causes the delay.
