Path type RegularExpression matcher

It looks like RegularExpression path matcher requires RE2 type of regular expressions while nginx supports PCRE.
This discrepancy hinders migration from the nginx-ingress where the PCRE syntax was accepted.
Why does the gateway enforce additional constrains ?
