[Feature Request] Remove the `1.x` and `2.x` branches

No more minor releases are planned for the 2.x branch. In fact, we have not been maintaining the 2.x branch since the 3.0 release, so even if we did want to do a 2.20 release then we should probably cut a new branch from the 2.19 branch as that one contains the latest dependency updates and bug fixes since we are still maintaining a 2.19.x maintenance release.

Also, we kept the 1.x branch alive for the duration of the 2.x version despite never releasing from it. That branch should have been removed long ago and should be removed now.

Remove the branches.

We could keep the branches around, but it will lead to confusion with no value that I can see.
